THEATRE
Mumbai has a flourishing theatre industry. The folk tradition in Mumbai is very much alive and plays in the vernacular get very enthusiastic responses. Dramas in various languages are staged regularly at the Tata Theatre, Prithivi Theatre, Tata Experimental Theatre etc. Some important names in the theatre world of Mumbai are Alyque Padamsee, Vijay Tendulkar and the Kapoors, the first family of the Hindi film industry.

Weekly and fortnightly publications, the daily engagement columns, and newspaper advertisements provide comprehensive Holidays Information about programmes and venues. Some of the popular theatres/auditoria in Mumbai are the Tata Theatre, Birla Matushri Sabagriha. Patker hall, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Tejpal Auditorium, Sophia Bhabha Auditorium, Ravindra Natya Sabhagriha, Shivaji Natya Mandir and Shanmukhananda Hall.

MUSIC & DANCE
Mumbai attracts the finest Indian classical music and dance artists from all over the country. Concerts and recitals are held regularly at Venus such as the Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, Cowasjee Jehangir (CJ) Hall, birla matushri, Tejpal auditorium, Shanmukhananda Hall and the national center for the performing arts (NCPA) AUDITORIUM. NCPA, at Nariman point, hosts Marathi plays, dance troops from different parts of India, Indian classical music, ensembles from Europe. Cultural centers like the British council, alliance Françoise and max Muller Bhawan also host dance performances.

MOVIES
Generation of Indian has grown pon Hindi films. Even today, one of the most popular family excursions is to go watch a film in the therate. Mumbai has more than an hundred theatres. The film industry, popularly known as bollywod, turns out potboilers, ‘art’ films and middle-of the road cinema. The films are mostly pur3e entertainers with the usual song –and –dance numbers, villains mouthing fierce dialogues and the hero who with the hell of the heroine take on the world. The actors and actresses of mainstream cinema are cult figures with a huge fan following.

For Hindi movies checkout Eros which is opposite church gate station or metro which is on M.G. road. For English movies the best places is regal on colaba causeway and sterling in fort.

GALLERIES & MUSEUMS
Mumbai also has quite a few interesting museums and art galleries. The Prince of Wales museum was built to commemorate king George V’s first visit to India. It has and impressive collections to terracotta figures from different parts of the encounter, miniature paintings, and sculptures from elephant islands and European paintings. The museum is located between colaba and fort and is open from Tuesday to Sundays. Jehangir art gallery is an important place for exhibitions by various artists. It is open daily between 11.00 am and 7.00pm. The national gallery of modern art has a large exhibition space showcasing Indian modern art. It is open from Tuesday to Sundays.

THE MATHERAN TOY TRAIN
This tiny hill resort was, till 1850, practically unknown. Nestling about 800m above sea level, Matheran (meaning jungle head) is the nearest hill resort to Mumbai- just about 2 hours away on a pune-bound train. Away from the din of the city, Matheran soothes the tired nerves and brings a song to the lips.

As the title narrow gauge train (which was introduced in 1907) wheezes up the Western Ghats into the clear mountains air, you get a breathing view of the hills and plains below. The train runs only between sunrise and sunset, and is discontinued from mid- June to end September, during the monsoons.

Neral, which is the starting point of the journey up, is easly accessible by Mumbai’s local trains.
